It has been a while since I have written something but I thought I would get back into the swing of things. A few years ago, our lives changed overnight when South Africa went into lockdown. For many of us that was the moment the way we work and look for work shifted forever. I’ve seen these changes up close at DB Recruitment, and I wanted to share what’s different now and what that means for you, whether you are hiring or hunting for your next role.
Recruitment has become more considered
Employers are being picky and fairly so. A new hire is an investment, not just someone to fill a desk. That means they want people who can do the job today and grow with the business tomorrow. If you are a candidate, do not just tick the boxes on the job spec. Be ready to explain how you will add value and stick around. If you are an employer, be clear about the long term and what you expect from new hires.
Flexibility matters but it is not the same for everyone
Remote and hybrid working are here to stay in many industries, but not every role can be done from home. If flexibility matters to you, ask about it early. Employers: be realistic about what you can offer; genuine flexibility attracts great people.
Digital is now normal
We are interviewing, testing and onboarding online. That has opened up opportunities, but it also means candidates must be comfortable with digital meetings and present well on camera. Treat a Zoom call like a face-to-face interview: be on time, be professional and check your tech beforehand. Employers should keep the process fair and make digital steps clear.
Skills plus attitude beat qualifications alone
Yes, qualifications open doors, but increasingly it is your attitude, your ability to solve problems and how you work with others that decide the hire. If two people have the same skills, the one with the right mindset wins. Show you are coachable and eager to learn.
Keep learning; it is no longer optional
Things change quickly. Short courses, online certifications and hands-on projects keep your CV current. For employers, support upskilling; it keeps your team relevant and engaged.
People want more than a pay cheque
Many candidates now weigh company culture, development and supportive leadership as heavily as salary. If you want to attract talent, be honest about your culture and show clear career paths.
Communication builds trust
A small thing that makes a big difference is keeping candidates updated. Regular feedback and realistic timelines make the process better for everyone. It costs little and shows respect.
The job market looks different today, but opportunity still exists. If you are looking for work, be adaptable, keep learning and make every application count. If you are hiring, hire for long-term fit, be transparent and use technology wisely.
Until next time,
